“I have such special memories from the workshop that will stay with me for the rest of my life and I genuinely think Peter has an incredible gift for teaching. He makes people feel safe and valued and the content is clear, fun and interactive.”
–Alex Carlisle, Soprano
What will I learn in this workshop?
In this workshop you will learn 3 simple yet powerful keys to achieve lasting vocal freedom, which include:
- how to naturally release unnecessary muscular tension that strains your voice
- how to harness the power of effortless, natural breathing to sing longer phrases
- how to deal with stage fright and nerves so you can perform with confidence
With expert hands-on guidance, you will discover how to sing and perform with more freedom using less effort.
“Your technical knowledge of the human body, thorough understanding of the Alexander Technique, and ability to relate to others come together to create an enjoyable and impactful workshop.”
–Cara Semler, Soprano
“What an amazing day! You provided a very sensitive, safe environment to work in and how you handled the different capabilities and nuances of the group was really special, very supportive and constructive. The accompanist you chose was an added bonus – her musicianship and sensitivity to each person, together with her genuine feedback to the group was very valuable. My aim was to find my true authentic voice and I did just that. What surprised me was how good I felt when I smiled and just went with the music. I have now put a lot of negativity behind me and already am finding more resonance in my speaking voice…it certainly seems to be my time to branch out and have a lot of fun! THANK YOU AGAIN.
–Eileen Johnson, Amateur Singer
Who is this workshop for?
Singers (and teachers) of all genres and abilities are invited to register, including:
- Aspiring & emerging professional singers who want to accelerate their careers and get more gigs
- Enthusiastic amateurs who want to expand what’s possible with their singing (even if you’re a beginner!)
- Choral directors looking for holistic mind-body-voice techniques to use with choristers
- Choral singers who want to gain more confidence and experience more joy in their singing
- Voice teachers who want new, proven tools to help their students sing with more freedom
NOTE: This workshop will likely take you outside of your comfort zone, which is where the learning and growth happens (don’t worry…it’s done in a way that’s playful, fun and supportive!). If you’re not willing to experiment with new ideas and be playful then this workshop won’t be a good fit for you.
Additionally, if you are just looking for a cheat sheet or a set of quick fixes, then this workshop is not for you. The strategies you’ll learn (which are based on the world-famous Alexander Technique) do work but they take time and effort to implement. This workshop will be the beginning of a process of changing non-useful habits that don’t serve you in your singing and life. That being said, it’s likely that making a few simple changes will make an immediate difference, perhaps even a dramatic one.
“Peter’s workshop helped me achieve the poise and confidence I needed for the South Eastern Theater Conference. I was able to present my package free of tension and with controlled nerves, making me feel like I had the best audition I can remember! I will definitely be returning before future audition conferences to workshop my material! What a difference it made aurally, physically, and emotionally after just one session! I would recommend this workshop to everyone!”
–Meghan Taylor, Musical Theater Singer
What will the learning environment be like?
We believe singers learn best in an atmosphere where they feel safe and supported. The learning environment in TVF workshops is non-competitive, nurturing, fun, playful and interactive!
Who is leading the workshop?
The workshop will be led by Peter Jacobson, Michael Hanko and Eleni Vosniadou. You can read more about them here.
What is the workshop agenda?
This one-day workshop will be divided into two sessions (roughly 3 hours each) with a lunch break in between (there will be several snack breaks throughout the day as well):
- Morning Session (~3 hours)– an interactive exploration of the top 3 keys to total vocal freedom. Through interactive games, activities, and exercises you’ll find more freedom and ease with your voice in a way that’s practical and fun.
- Lunch Break – enjoy a relaxing lunch break and get to know your new colleagues and friends.
- Afternoon Session (~3 hours) – will be a masterclass with a provided accompanist and will be practical application of the material covered in the morning session. Whether you choose to sing in front of the group or not, you will still get great benefit from watching Peter work with others in a non-competitive and safe performing environment.
Here’s what singers have said about TVF workshops:
“I loved the masterclass aspect. Learning concepts is one thing, but seeing and putting them into action is SO helpful. This workshop was thought-provoking and extremely helpful. Thank you very much for your time and expertise!”
–Mary Sullivan, Mezzo-Soprano
“I learned so much, it’s hard to put it into words. I am still digesting what I have learned, and aiming to put it into practice going forward. It was brilliant! I think this workshop instills in the participants greater confidence not just in singing, but in life in general, which is a wonderful thing. Thank you again for your patience, enthusiasm, positive attitude and encouragement, Peter. You are a great teacher.”
–Caroline Repton, Choral Singer
“This was an amazing eye-opening experience that cleared up a lot of questions I had. In just three hours I learned to rethink how my body moves. I feel like a different person!”
–Henry deBuchananne, Baritone
“I really benefitted from the ‘hands-on’ approach, and your sensitivity to each student’s needs.”
–Mary Slomba, Soprano
“I really liked how you used a range of materials–handouts, photos on computer, anecdotes, etc. to make your points. I also thought it was effective how you focused on distinct areas of the body for each singer.”
–Thea Tullman Moore, Soprano
“I found the workshop to be eye-opening. I never would have guessed that just having a better understanding and awareness of how the body is designed to function could make such a difference in how I sing. Peter’s enthusiasm for the technique is infectious, and his patient, hands-on training really works.”
–Nancy Huddleston, Singer
“I was very impressed with your introductory class. You found a way to include all of your students and address their concerns without overwhelming them with too much information. I really like the way you structured the class. You are clearly passionate about your work.”
–Katie Katinas, Voice Teacher
“I was just so bowled over by your session, I can’t thank you enough. I love to sing but often my throat gets tight and my voice gets worse. I managed to get just half an hour with Peter when he was at a conference in Chicago. Within just 5 minutes I already had more improvement than I was hoping for. By the end of the 30 minutes he had helped me improved my stance in all kinds of subtle ways and that had made a massive difference to my voice. It sounded so much more confident, I was hitting the right notes and with less effort I was getting more volume. The strain was gone. Now, three days later, my voice is still better. My throat is relaxed and my voice has a better quality, better volume and a more resonance. I’ve already booked him for next time I’m at the conference.”
–Nancy Slessenger, Choral Singer
“The audition workshop not only helped me gain new consciousness and a higher sense of what I can control in an audition, but it also gave me tools for my everyday life that have improved my posture and wellbeing. I really appreciated the group dialogue aspect. It fostered a sense of caring and community, albeit for a short while, that is sometimes difficult to find in the competitive world of singing. You are not alone, and it was a great help to be reminded of that.”
–Alexandra Schleuderer, Soprano
“Peter Jacobson helped me discover that I am in control. I cannot expect the audience to accept me if I have not accepted myself. The mind and the body are powerful tools and with just one class, I have a better understanding of how to access mine more effortlessly than before and right before auditions!!”
–Rebecca Wood, Soprano
“I participated in a series of classes before leaving for Germany after grad school–BEST DECISION EVER! The results of just one class are clearly audible. Peter is a great teacher and his specific attention to singers creates an invaluable learning experience. Total Vocal Freedom gets my highest recommendation!”
–Brieann Pasko, Soprano
“Studying Alexander Technique with Peter has allowed me to access physical and vocal awareness more efficiently than ever before. Understanding the correlation between mind, body, and voice has become a vital tool in my own vocal journey; therefore, I highly recommend it to anyone pursuing vocal and physical health.”
–Janna Critz, Mezzo-Soprano
